Why offshore UltraTax staffing is the cleanest tax engagement we run

UltraTax CS is the tax platform most prevalent in mid-to-large CPA firms that care about workflow integration. It ties directly into FileCabinet CS for document management, NetClient CS for client portals, Accounting CS for trial balance imports, and Practice CS for time and billing. Offshore preparers trained on UltraTax typically know the full Thomson Reuters stack, which means less configuration friction at onboarding.

The typical UltraTax engagement

Most CPA firms using UltraTax engage offshore preparers in September or October with a November onboarding and pilot returns in December. By January 15th, preparers are productive on simple 1040s. By February 1st, they're handling mid-complexity returns. By mid-March, they're producing the 1065s and 1120-S returns that the US seniors don't have capacity to run themselves.

UltraTax workflow review

UltraTax has a built-in review workflow (Tick-Mark, Annotate, Lock/Unlock) that offshore preparers use consistently. Your US reviewer opens the return, sees annotated tick marks from the offshore preparer, and reviews with clear visibility into what's been checked. This is different from platforms where review is just "open the return and look at the numbers" – UltraTax's workflow tooling makes the offshore/US handoff cleaner.

Cost per return on UltraTax

A senior offshore UltraTax preparer at $3,000–$3,600/month produces ~250 returns per season (Jan through April). That's $12–$15 per return in direct labor, against a typical firm billing of $250–$600 per return. The margin math is the reason firms move UltraTax prep offshore.

FAQ

UltraTax offshore questions

Do offshore preparers have direct UltraTax logins or work through our hosted environment?

Depends on your setup. If you run UltraTax on Right Networks, Swizznet, or similar, offshore preparers remote in under a named user. If you host internally, we configure a remote access path (usually a secure VDI). Either way, no local UltraTax installation on offshore machines.

Can you handle the full Thomson Reuters stack – FileCabinet, NetClient, Accounting CS?

Yes. Full Thomson Reuters stack experience is standard for UltraTax specialists. FileCabinet CS for workpapers, NetClient CS for client portal, Accounting CS for trial balance imports, Practice CS for time tracking.

What about UltraTax version upgrades during busy season?

Preparers are trained annually on the new tax year before season starts. The UltraTax updates that flow through during January–April (form corrections, software patches) are applied by your firm's hosting environment – offshore preparers see them as you see them.

Do you work with firms using Onvio (the cloud Thomson Reuters platform)?

Yes. Onvio Tax is supported as a cloud-native alternative to desktop UltraTax. Fewer firms use it but we match staff with Onvio experience where firms have moved to it.

How do you handle tax season peak load? 60-hour weeks?

Standard seat is 40 hours/week. For busy-season surge, we offer 50–55 hour overtime tiers at a premium rate (15–25% above base). Firms scoping peak load should plan this into the engagement.
